The Home Care Industry

The UK senior care industry is huge and growing rapidly. People need extra care and support for a variety of reasons, such as old age, physical disability, dementia or sensory impairment. Moving out of your home to receive care is a huge step, and many prefer to remain in their own home where they feel the most comfortable.

The Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC) predicts that 57% more adults aged 65 and over in England will require care in 2038 compared to 2018 so the opportunity is huge.

In 2023 there were 11 million people aged over 65 in England. This is projected to increase by 10% in the next five years and by 32% by 2043 (1.1 and 3.5 million people respectively). The population aged 85+, the age group most likely to need health and care services, is also projected to rise rapidly, increasing by 8.2% in the next five years and by 62.7% by 2043 (126,000 and 956,000 people respectively)

Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are staggeringly expensive — the average cost of a nursing home is close to £50,000 per year and rising and assisted living is even more costly. Most private insurance policies don’t cover long-term care.

The Care Services Platform

Nurse Next Door’s franchise concept has always been built around one key, unique differentiator — centralisation. Unlike every other home health care franchise system, we believe our Franchise Partners should be out in their community, not stuck behind a desk. What started as a call centre to manage scheduling has evolved into so much more!

Inbound Sales

The Nurse Next Door brand and marketing systems are designed to get your phone to ring. Once they do, our Intakes Team is responsible for answering customer enquiries.

Happier Ageing Philosophy

Nurse Next Door is a premium home care brand that takes pride in empowering seniors to live life to the fullest—after all, why shouldn’t ageing be celebrated?

Our home care services are delivered through a philosophy of Happier Ageing™, driven by five main principles:

  • Choice
  • Belonging
  • Respect
  • Autonomy
  • Purpose

We deeply believe that ageing should be the best part of life, which is why we work hard to get our clients back to doing the things they love.

When we meet our clients for the first time, we ask them, “What did you use to love doing that you can no longer do?” and work to infuse that into every visit. Life isn’t just about ticking off tasks or only caring for basic needs; it’s also about infusing joy—whether big or small—into each and every day!

So, tell us, how do you infuse Happier Ageing™ into your life?

At the first visit, we ask our clients,

What did you use to love doing that you can no longer do?

Our Brand

In a space as competitive as private-duty home care, you need a brand that turns heads. The Nurse Next Door brand’s icon is a flower-heart bursting with joy in the colours yellow and pink. It symbolises our core purpose of Making Lives Better and unique trademark concept of Happier Ageing™.

In a sea of cold, stale, clinical providers, our bold brand serves as a huge advantage when our Franchise Partners are in the community. The pop of colours and our equally bright attitudes makes us stand out from the crowd—quite literally!

Skilled Care

Most of our home health care franchise competitors provide only non-skilled care. Nurse Next Door offers all components of care, from companionship right up to skilled nursing. Our support team will guide you through the state licensing process. This allows you to be the one-stop-shop for home care, expanding your reach of clients in the community.

Whether it’s a little help around the house with chores, meal prep, personal care or nursing care, we can do the caring. We provide premium care to seniors and get them back to doing the things they love, so they can continue to age happily and healthily at home!

Our Story

Building a successful home health care business

Co-Founders Ken Sim and John DeHart found an opportunity when Ken’s wife went on emergency bed rest while pregnant.

Ken employed a caregiver and discovered that the caregiver had just started work after faxing in her resume the previous day. She had never met her employer.

Looking into the home health care business industry further, Ken and John found sterile businesses that provided the basics, making life only slightly more bearable for their clients. They knew that they could create something better and launched Nurse Next Door in 2001.
